Catholic clergy are among a group of prominent Australian religious leaders who have written a letter to the ABC protesting cuts to its religious programming and staffing.
The Bishop of Wollongong, Peter Ingham, who is Chair of the Australian Catholic Media Council, and Rev Richard Leonard SJ, Director of the Australian Catholic Office for Film and Broadcasting, are among 28 signatories to the letter to ABC Managing Director Mark Scott and Chairman Jim Spigelman.
The leaders say in the letter they believe “the faith and values we hold will always occupy a central part in the formation of our Australian national identity.”
The leaders also believe that “no broadcaster committed to the common good, let alone one seeking to provide a comprehensive service to all Australians… should diminish its commitment to the broadcasting of religion”.
The letter has also been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s office and to the Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
