Broken Bay Diocese has appointed two independent panels to further the diocese's commitment to safeguarding, transparency and accountability.

The appointment of the panels follows the September 2018 launch of the Diocesan Office for Safeguarding, an initiative commenced under the leadership of former Broken Bay bishop Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli. The office marked the first stage of a new structure for the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults within Broken Bay by drawing together the valuable work being done in safeguarding, child protection and professional standards across the diocese's administration, parishes, schools and CatholicCare Broken Bay.

“As a Diocese, we are committed to a practice of leadership which is inclusive and professional, and which strives for a healthy culture of responsibility, accountability and transparency,” said Fr David Ranson, Diocesan Administrator.

“An essential element, particularly in the areas of accountability and transparency, is the engagement of independent expertise. To this purpose I am very pleased to announce, on behalf of the Diocese, the appointment of two independent panels: The Diocesan Safeguarding Strategic Advisory Panel and the Diocesan Safeguarding Panel of Review which will commence operation from [this month].”

Under chair Garth Blake AM SC, the seven-member Diocesan Safeguarding Strategic Advisory Panel will bring national and international policy and best practice advice to the diocese. Fellow members include Professor Darryl Higgins, Professor Ilan Katz, Sr Maree Marsh CSB, Lyn Ainsworth and Peter Hamill. Director for the Diocesan Office for Safeguarding, Jodie Crisafulli, will sit on both panels.

The Diocesan Safeguarding Strategic Advisory Panel met for the first time last Friday and will meet quarterly each year.

The Diocesan Safeguarding commitment will also be informed by the five-member Diocesan Safeguarding Review Panel, which will provide independent evaluation of the redress the diocese seeks to provide to those who have suffered abuse. Membership is drawn from expertise in the areas of canon law; family law; social work - particularly with children and families; trauma management and counselling; and healing and support for survivors of abuse.
