ABC announces new religious radio programming

John Cleary not returning

ABC Radio National will launch a new religious panel program next year, titled God Forbid, on Sunday nights, as part of an overhaul of its programming, reports Fairfax Media.

The new program will hosted by James Carleton.

In other changes affecting religious programming, The Nightlife program on ABC local radio will be extended from five to seven nights a week. Sunday Nights with John Cleary, which focuses on religious issues, will not return next year.

Last week ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie met a delegation in Sydney that included the Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge, Fr Frank Brennan SJ, World Vision chief executive Tim Costello, and senior Uniting Church minister Elenie Poulos, in response to anger at slated cuts to religious content without consultation.

She is understood to have promised no net cuts to religious content and also agreed to meet the delegation regularly, although those details are yet to be finalised.
