The Cairns Diocese is inviting the faithful to join in with the official prayer of the Church as it livestreams The Liturgy of the Hours and Mass daily.
In a pastoral letter to Cairns Catholics, Bishop James Foley likened the closure of churches across the country to an “enforced retreat”.
“Our enforced retreat from the world can be an opportunity to grow closer to God and more prayerful,” Bishop Foley wrote.
“People were greatly edified by recent images of Pope Francis’ pilgrimage on foot through the empty streets of Rome to the image of Our Lady of Health.
“Let’s join him, then, in prayer and fasting for those who have died or are suffering from COVID-19, those at risk or anxious, those treating the sick or seeking a cure, as well as those who are leading us. The power of prayer, married with the wisdom of health experts, will ease and hopefully eliminate this disease.”
The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, is the official set of prayers “marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer”.
Cairns Diocese began live-streaming from the Bishop’s House Chapel on Monday on its YouTube channel.
The daily schedule is:
- 9am: Morning Prayer
- 12pm: Midday Prayer
- 3pm: Office of Readings
- 5pm: Evening Prayer
- 5pm: Mass of the Day
- 6pm: Night Prayer of the Church
On Sundays, Mass will be live-streamed at 10am.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be streamed at all other times during the day and night.
CathNews has introduced a regular feature on resources to support people’s prayer and spiritual lives during a time when public Masses are suspended. If your diocese, organisation or agency has a website, podcast, YouTube channel or other resource you would like promoted, please send a brief description and the relevant link to [email protected]
