Officially blessed by Townsville Bishop Timothy Harris last week, the Mercy Centre will enable doctors to perform up to 10,000 operations each year. The centre is stage one in a 10-year $100m master plan for the Pimlico campus, which will see a $9m maternity and neonatal unit, a $19m project to create a one-stop medical hub for end-to-end treatment with specialist doctors, and a $20m investment in a new six-level car park.

Mater Hospitals Group chair Francis Sullivan said the facility was a great coup for the city.

Mater Health North and Central Queensland regional Director Gerard Wyvill said the centre was intended to facilitate unmet needs across the region and beyond.

Mater CEO Peter Steer said the facility represented a historic link between Mater’s longstanding heritage in Queensland communities and the future.

Dr Steer said it had been 75 years since the Sisters of Mercy founded Mater Private Hospital in Townsville and the new centre provided a roadmap for going forward.
