Business Manager - Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart, Hobart, Tasmania

The Organisation

The Archdiocese of Hobart is the home of the Catholic Church in Tasmania. Renowned for its hands-on and practical approach to the service and pastoral care of people in this State, the Archdiocese works alongside local people and organisations to provide a diverse range of spiritual, educational, social and community support services to the people of Tasmania. As the southern-most diocese for the Catholic Church in Australia, the Archdiocese is the largest non-government employer in the State, employing around 5000 people, while delivering services in the areas of welfare, training, employment, aged care, education, health care, affordable housing, childcare, charitable works and laundry services to approximately 70,000 Tasmanians annually.

The Role

Reporting to the Archbishop of Hobart, the Business Manager is responsible for the sound financial and commercial management of the temporal goods of the Archdiocese. The Business Manager is responsible for providing inspirational leadership, strategic planning and advice for the Archdiocese in finance, commercial management, investments, property, fundraising and stewardship. The Business Manager is ultimately responsible for promoting a positive organisational culture that fosters and supports the mission of the Catholic Church. They are responsible for the provision of strategic leadership and planning, effective management and advocacy for the Diocese. The Business Manager is responsible for advising the Archbishop and Archdiocesan leaders on high level matters of significance to the whole of the Archdiocese.

Key Requirements

The Business Manager will ideally possess the following qualifications, knowledge and experience:

  • A strong and personal commitment to the Catholic faith and to the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Experience providing strategic and financial commercial advice, developing financial plans to support strategic investments and initiatives as well as long-term financial sustainability, and an ability to proactively identify and deliver revenue growth initiatives and disciplined cost and productivity management
  • High-level senior management experience within corporate services overseeing and delivering best-practice outcomes in strategic planning, financial management, general administration, human resources, communications, investments and property services
  • An influential and inspiring leadership style, with a demonstrated ability to lead large, complex and diverse organisations and people, as well as engage effectively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Tertiary qualifications in Financial Management, Business Administration, Accounting or other qualifications relevant to this role
  • A thorough understanding of the Catholic Church, its mission and its unique challenges and opportunities
  • A comprehensive understanding of corporate governance, compliance, risk and the legal and regulatory environment governing commercial and not-for-profit organisations
