Organisational Context

St Albert’s College was founded in 1969 and is a work of the Diocese of Armidale, operating within the University of New England. St Albert’s College prides itself on offering a harmonious and supportive environment where a fundamental care for the beliefs, feelings, and property of others is of the utmost importance. The College is co-educational and houses up to 310 male and female residents with a vision to be a leading university residential College shaping courageous, committed, emotionally intelligent and engaged citizens.

Position Profile and Accountability

 The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Executive Dean and plays a key role in fostering a supportive and vibrant residential community. Together with the Executive Dean, the Assistant Dean provides guidance and support to our pastoral student leaders (Residential Advisors) and broader support for resident engagement and wellbeing – in alignment with the ethos and mission of the College. Working closely with the Executive Dean, the Assistant Dean will provide leadership and assistance in areas including:

  • Academic support for residents
  • Personal and pastoral care
  • Risk management, community engagement, and safety
  • Health and wellbeing initiatives
  • Community service opportunities
  • Faith and life programs
  • Student clubs and committees

 

The Assistant Dean ensures that residents experience a holistic environment that promotes academic success, personal growth, and community life.

 

Key Responsibilities

Student Wellbeing

  • Provide pastoral and mentoring support to foster academic and personal growth.
  • Together with the Executive Dean, design and lead wellbeing programs (e.g., Health Week, Mental Health Awareness Week, R U OK? Day).
  • Respond to individual student concerns and refer to appropriate services when needed
  • Build networks for early detection of wellbeing issues.
  • Respond to some after hours issues as required.
  • Serve as a point of contact for student inquiries and concerns.
  • Assist in implementing risk management and safety protocols within the residential community.

Leadership

  • Together with the Executive Dean, provide leadership and support to the Leadership Team.
  • Manage Residential Advisor duty rosters
  • Facilitate regular catchups with the Student Leadership Team
  • Provide support to the Executive Dean in matters relating to Student discipline and student misconduct proceedings.
  • Together with the Executive Dean, design and lead leadership programs that are engaging, informative, and productive for our residents and student leaders (e.g. Leadership Training Week and Careers Week).

Academic Support

  • Together with the Executive Dean, Senior Academic Advisor, and Deputy Academic Advisor, establish and implement an academic support program which will enhance learning outcomes for all residents.

Orientation

  • Together with the Executive Dean, facilitate a safe, engaging, productive and informative orientation for commencing residents that is aligned with the values of the college.

Workplace Health and Safety (WHS)

Contributing to a safe and healthy workplace by:

  • Adhering to relevant statutory legislative and College policy requirements to ensure that services are provided in a safe manner at all times;
  • Ensuring a safe environment exists for students, staff, and members of the public;
  • Reporting any potential risks, incidents or hazards by completing an incident/hazard report and informing the Executive Dean.
  • Working towards continuously improving the safety management system;
  • Working to ensure both your own and others’ safety.

Operational

  • Assist the Executive Dean with some day-to-day administrative tasks.
  • Prepare and distribute agendas, take accurate minutes, and follow up on action items for meetings.
  • Compile reports on student engagement, academic performance, and residential operations.
  • Support some promotional activities for the college

Student Welfare & Compliance

  • Act as a confidential resource for students disclosing incidents such as sexual assault, harassment, or other sensitive matters such as gender-based violence.
  • Ensure disclosures are handled in accordance with institutional policy and legal requirements.
  • Provide immediate support and refer students appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of disclosures while respecting privacy and confidentiality standards.
  • Participate in mandatory training on trauma-informed response, gender-based violence awareness and prevention, and reporting obligations.

Professional Development

  • Attend mandatory training from time to time.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of industry best practice, innovative solutions, and personal technical expertise and development.
