ACCOUNTANT
CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF TOOWOOMBA
Applications are invited for the full-time position of Accountant with the Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba.
The responsibility of the Accountant is to help oversee the accounting and payroll functions of the Diocesan Finance Office ensuring accounting and payroll practices are being conducted in an efficient manner and at all times complying with regulatory frameworks and professional standards.
As part of the finance office team, the role focuses on supporting the Diocese’s Manager Financial Services in the financial operations of the Diocese and its associated entities.
Key Accountabilities/Duties/Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reconciliations
• Using integrated accounting package Evolution by Sage – which may include processing daily payments, receipts, bank reconciliations, and journals as required.
• Manage the HR3 payroll system, ensuring data integrity and compliance with Awards and other industrial relations legislation including STP reporting, super, QLeave and PAYG
• Perform general ledger reconciliations, including bank, wages and superannuation
• Prepare and post journals including FBT tax, accruals, employee entitlements, bonds, recoveries, and rent
• Prepare and lodge Workcover declarations and IAS, BAS, and FBT returns
• Complete End of month reports including Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss and Ministry income and expenditure statements for Diocesan programs
• Complete End of month processes including distributing the clients bank statements
Fixed Assets
• Run and review monthly depreciation
• Reconcile the Fixed Asset Register to the general ledger
Reporting, Compliance and Treasury Support
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements
• Maintain strong internal controls
• Respond to finance-related queries from non-finance teams
• Support ad hoc financial projects and initiatives as required
• Oversee the day-to-day accounting of the treasury functions of the Diocesan Development Fund including monitoring cash flow within the investment portfolio parameters and management of related software
Year-End Accounting
• Prepare work papers, reconciliations and supporting schedules
• Prepare end of financial year reports and liaise with External Auditors
We are looking for candidates who have:
• Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, finance or a similar discipline would be highly regarded
• Membership of a professional accounting body CA/CPA
• Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and finance office administration practices
• Demonstrated knowledge of payroll processes and principles
• Understanding of financial accounting principles and the preparation of the financial statements
• Sound knowledge of integrated financial accounting systems and related individual accounting activities
• Willingness to undertake development opportunities relevant to performance of duties.
• An appreciation of the operations of the Catholic Church and its various outreach activities
Work Experience
• Appropriate experience (minimum 5 years) in a financial accounting or similar office environment
• Proven ability to use SharePoint and Microsoft Office software particularly excel
• Experience in the application and/or use of computerised accounting/funds management systems including bringing online new or updated software modules
• Active involvement in various financial accounting processes up to and including the preparation of financial reports
• Experience in payroll operations

Remuneration will be in accordance with the Diocesan Salaried Officers Scale.
