Chief Finance Officer (CFO) (VIC)
posted 1 day ago in Diocese , in LeadershipJob Description
Not every CFO starts with the title.
Some start by building high-performing teams. By driving financial efficiency, and By turning numbers into decisions that matter.
If that sounds like you—keep reading.
Why this role is different
This isn’t a “normal” finance job.
You’ll step into a pivotal leadership role with the Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst, helping shape the financial future of a complex, purpose-driven organisation that supports communities across the region.
You’ll work directly with senior leadership, influence important decisions, and lead meaningful change—while mentoring staff committed to delivering financial outcomes that affect mission.
What you’ll actually do
- Lead the finance function end-to-end — from day-to-day operations to long-term strategy
- Turn data into direction — providing clear, actionable insights to senior leaders
- Lift capability — mentor and develop a finance team that’s ready for the future
- Modernise systems and processes — drive efficiency, automation, and reporting
- Strengthen governance and controls — without slowing the organisation down
- Partner across the organisation — not just report the numbers, but shape the story
What we’re looking for
You might already be a CFO—or you might be a senior finance leader ready to step up.
Either way, you’ll likely bring:
- Experience in finance, accounting, or commercial roles
- Strong foundations in financial reporting, compliance, and controls
- A track record of improving systems, processes, or performance
- Confidence working with senior stakeholders and influencing decisions
- CA/CPA (or working towards it)
- The ability to balance detail with big-picture, mission driven thinking
Most importantly: ambition, curiosity, and the confidence to lead.
Why you’ll want this role
- Real impact — your work supports communities, not just profit
- Breadth — exposure across multiple entities, systems, and challenges
- Growth — a genuine step into (or expansion of) a CFO-level role
- Autonomy — space to lead, improve, and build something better
- Lifestyle — Bendigo offers affordability, flexibility, and a strong community feel
A quick note on fit
This is a values-driven organisation committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and vulnerable people. You don’t need to come from a religious background—but you do need to respect and work within that environment.
If you’re waiting to be “ready” for a CFO role, you might miss it.
If you’re already doing the work—this is your chance to own the title.
Apply now, submit your resume along with a brief cover note highlighting the impact you’re ready to make.
