Permanent Full-Time Role – 70 Hours a Fortnight (35 Hours per Week)

The Catholic Diocese of Bathurst is inviting applications for the role of Corrective Services Chaplain at Wellington Correctional Centre.
This permanent paid chaplaincy position offers a meaningful opportunity to provide pastoral and spiritual support within the correctional environment. It forms part of the Diocese’s ministry of presence to those living and working within the prison community.
Wellington Correctional Centre accommodates both male and female inmates, offering a unique and important setting for ministry across a diverse community.
This role may be especially suited to a priest, deacon, religious, or experienced lay person who feels called to serve in a deeply meaningful ministry where their years of pastoral experience, compassion, and faith can help some of the most vulnerable members of our society encounter hope, dignity, and the love of God.
For the right candidate, an attractive employment package may be negotiated, including possible relocation assistance and support with accommodation.
The successful applicant will work collaboratively with correctional staff and other chaplaincy team members to offer pastoral care and spiritual support to inmates and staff.
Key Responsibilities
The chaplain will:
- Provide pastoral and spiritual care to inmates
- Support the spiritual wellbeing of Correctional Officers and departmental staff when appropriate
- Facilitate opportunities for prayer, reflection, and faith engagement
- Assist inmates preparing for release to reconnect with faith communities and support services
- Work respectfully within the multi-faith chaplaincy environment of the correctional centre
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality, and safeguarding practices
Essential Requirements
Applicants should ideally demonstrate:
- Graduate studies in Theology, Ministry, or a related field
- Completion of, or willingness to undertake, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
- Strong self-management and pastoral leadership skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to Professional Standards and Safe Church practices
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and pastoral sensitivity
- Capacity to pass all Corrective Services security checks
- A current driver’s licence
