Catholic Education – Diocese of Rockhampton, is a large, dynamic and growing organisation with a current enrolment of approximately 18,220 students and a staff of approximately 3,899 in 10 Kindergartens, 19 Outside School Hours Care Services, 31 Catholic Primary Schools and 8 Catholic Secondary Colleges. Catholic Education in the Diocese of Rockhampton serves communities from Bundaberg in the south to Mackay in the north and west to Longreach.
Catholic schools have played a significant role in the education of young Australians in Central Queensland for over 160 years. Catholic schooling within the Western Region began with the establishment of St Joseph’s Convent School in Barcaldine (now St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School) in 1896. In 1900, the Josephites opened St Joseph’s Convent School in Clermont, while the Presentation sisters arrived in Longreach the same year, initiating a Convent School. A second Presentation sisters primary school was established in Emerald in 1902 (now St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School). St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Blackall was founded by the Josephite Sisters in 1917, and a Convent School was established by the Sisters of Mercy in Springsure in 1926. Marist College in Emerald was established by the Marist Brothers in 1996 and provides secondary schooling for students from Emerald as well as the surrounding rural areas. Today, the Western Region has grown to 3 Kindergartens, 7 Primary Schools and 1 College.
Our Kindergartens, Primary Schools and Colleges are strongly supported within the Catholic Education Office by a dynamic and collaborative team in the areas of Teaching and Learning, Catholic Identity, Indigenous Education, ICT, Finance, Strategy, Business Development, Human Resources and Student Protection.
