Expressions of Interest – Chair of Mercy Education Limited

Mercy Education Limited (MEL) invites expressions of interest for the position of Chair of the Board. This is a unique opportunity to lead and steward Catholic education in the Mercy tradition across thirteen Colleges in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Governance

Mercy Education is responsible for the governance and operation of 13 colleges, nine in Victoria, three in Western Australia and one in South Australia, committed to the spirit of Mercy. The MEL National Office is in East Melbourne, Victoria. The Mercy Education Board’s mission is to lead, govern and grow our schools confidently and courageously, faithful to Catherine McAuley’s vision of the lived Gospel, with particular concern for those on the margins. Mercy Ministry Companions (MMC) is the sole member of MEL and is a ministerial public juridic person within the Catholic Church. MMC continues the Mercy tradition providing Community Service, Education, Health and Aged Care ministries across Australia enlivened by the spirit of Catherine McAuley.

The Role of the Chair

The Chair provides strategic leadership to the MEL Board, ensuring effective governance aligned with the mission and values of Catholic education. Working closely with the MEL CEO, Principals, and MMC, the Chair facilitates board operations, represents MEL in key forums, and nurtures board culture and formation in the Mercy tradition.

Key Requirements

We seek a leader who brings:

  • Demonstrated passion for education and commitment to Catholic ethos and Mercy values
  • Extensive governance and leadership experience, ideally within education or not-for-profit sectors
  • Proven ability to chair boards or committees with collaborative and inclusive leadership
  • Strong grasp of governance responsibilities, risk oversight, and compliance in complex regulatory environments
  • Capacity to build respectful and positive relationships with Principals, executives, and stakeholders
  • Understanding of Church structures and accountability within Catholic education ministries
