Job Description

Position Purpose 

 The Communications and Social Media Coordinator will lead and support the Diocese of Bunbury in collating and producing communications to parishioners and key stakeholders with the utmost responsibility and in accord with diocesan policy.

This role would ideally suit someone who is tech-savvy, enjoys being hands-on with content creation, scheduling and direct engagement with the Catholic community both online through the Bunbury Diocesan Website and social media platforms as well as offline. Confidentiality is a must, along with knowledge of the Catholic Church vision, teachings, structure and policies.

Key Responsibilities

Social Media (Facebook,  Instagram, YouTube etc)

 

  • Plan and post regular content (graphics, photos, videos, stories etc) to both engage and inform the community in ways that respect the dignity of self and others.
  • Cover key diocesan events by posting live updates, photos and reflections in real time or shortly thereafter.
  • Create simple graphics using approved tools for feast days, announcements, quotes and events.
  • Monitor interactions on all interactive digital platforms.
  • Respond to messages and comments in a timely manner responsibly and ethically in line with Catholic values.
  • Track basic analytics to see what is working and adjust content accordingly.
  • Develop content for presentations, flyers, posters and other media for staff/ministries.
  • Support the development, implementation and review of communications, media policies and procedures across the Diocese.

Website Management

  • Maintain accuracy of the diocesan website with up to date news items, event notices and key messages.
  • Upload pastoral letters, media releases and photos.
  • Update contact information and maintain content for parish listings, ministries and diocesan offices.
  • Assist with basic layout updates using approved Content Management Systems (CMS).

Communications & Content

 Draft short news items or summaries for events, provided by clergy, parish and diocesan staff.

  • Collaborate with clergy, staff, and ministry leaders to gather and share their stories.
  • Assist with monthly or seasonal e-newsletters using approved email marketing platforms.
  • Design notices and publications for events and agencies.
  • Maintain and update communication databases.
  • Respond to requests from the Bishop.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A willingness and capacity to support the Catholic ethos.
  • Excellent written and communications skills.
  • Advanced Information Technology skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the ethical principles and standards for communication across various platforms, especially in a Church or not for profit context.
  • Demonstrated experience using social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) and website CMS (e.g. WordPress).
  • Demonstrated design skills (e.g. Canva, Adobe , Pagemaker etc.).
  • Clear, engaging and accurate writing style – especially for short-form social posts and website content.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively.
  • Ability to produce high quality and professionally written documents.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Understanding or willingness to learn about the Catholic faith and diocesan life.
  • A current working With Children Check and National Police Clearance or willingness to obtain them.

Nice to Have

  • Photography or short video editing experience (e.g. using your phone or basic editing apps).
  • Experience working or volunteering in a similar role in a parish, school, or Catholic organisation.
  • Ability to attend key diocesan events and provide coverage when needed.
