Job Description
We currently seek to employ a Diocesan Archivist on a full-time basis with the Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba.
This position’s main purpose and primary objective is to oversee the Diocese of Toowoomba Archives for the purpose of collecting, assessing, cataloguing, preserving, conserving, and restoring where necessary, records of historical importance to the Diocese in accordance with Canon Law and best practice. A further purpose is to make available records to those persons authorised to view such information.
Key Accountabilities/Duties/Responsibilities include:
Support the Diocese’s mission and values.
General
- develop and review policies and procedures for Diocesan Archives in accordance with Canon Law requirements and in line with the principles of provenance and original order.
- provide advice on records management and archiving responsibilities for Diocesan Agencies and Parishes
- conduct research of archive materials and other sources when requested by the Bishop or other senior management in Diocese.
- represent the Diocese at Church gatherings and conferences connected with archives.
- attend conferences and other professional development opportunities to keep up to date with current practices and procedures.
Archiving
- maintain and develop the Diocesan Archive collections and records.
- preserve, conserve and restore where necessary records required to be archived.
- ensure archived records are registered and catalogued allowing effective retrieval.
Records Management
- where necessary collect and maintain other historical records that assist research in connection with Diocesan affairs
- where appropriate, collect and maintain museum items of historical significance to the Diocese.
Access
- facilitate appropriate access to records by internal and external users.
- assist researchers where practicable with enquiries.
 Administration
- manage the Archive Office as a safe and secure work and archive environment.
- prepare and manage annual budget in conjunction with the Financial Administrator
- supervise and manage Archives volunteers.
Development of respectful relationships
- Ensure the fundamental rights of children, young people and vulnerable adults are respected in so far as this applies in the Archives.
We are looking for candidates with these attributes:
Competencies:
- Should be qualified in Archives and Records Management or currently undertaking such qualifications from a recognised tertiary institution.
- Should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of best practice in archives and records management procedures.
- Will have excellent verbal and communication skills.
- Will support the values, ethos and mission of the Diocese of Toowoomba.
- Must hold or be willing to undertake a Police Clearance Check.
- Must hold have a Working with Children check for the State of Queensland.
Knowledge / Qualifications:
- Knowledge and understanding of Catholic Church teachings and culture.  Â
Work Experience:
- Suitable work experience in archives.
