About Us

Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) is the international agency for the aid and development work of the Marist Brothers in Australia throughout Asia and the Pacific Islands. AMS works with the people in this region on a combination of long-term and short-term development projects. These projects aim to develop or support locally sustained education opportunities for the young people in these regions. The concept of ‘solidarity’ is to ensure that young people in developing countries have access to the resources and support that are required so the Mission of the Marist Brothers may be achieved.

About the Role

Reporting to the Chair of the Board of Australian Marist Solidarity, you will manage the corporate responsibilities of AMS and support the Chair and Board with the implementation of organisation-wide policies, directives and the strategic plan.

You will provide highly professional support and advice to the Provincial Council and the Board and develop in a collaborative way the strategic plan for solidarity activities across the Province. You will effectively oversee and manage a range of Solidarity programs and activities, and work with the Board and members of the AMS team to ensure the sustainability of the organisation.

As Director of Solidarity, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining harmonious relationships across multiple authorities and agencies. Therefore, it is essential that the Director acts in a sensitive manner that respects differences, and promotes mutual respect, dignity and fairness at all times.

You will play an active role in promoting and maintaining the Marist culture and values in all the activities of AMS.  The key sources of these are the Gospel of Jesus, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and Marist tradition and spirituality. The Province’s Code of Conduct and the Institute’s documents, Water from the Rock and In the Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat,are clear expressions of core Marist principles.

At the heart of this role will be your ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders as it relates to the mission of the Marist Brothers, and an openness to work with the AMS team as it evolves and strives to meet the needs of the organisation.

This position is a full-time role and based at Brisbane. The role will require you to travel, both nationally and internationally.

Key Requirements

The Director of Solidarity will ideally possess the following knowledge, experience and qualifications:

• An understanding and appreciation of the Catholic Church and Marist mission and spirituality
• A strong appreciation of the social teaching of the Church and a deep commitment to solidarity
• Experience that demonstrates the capacity to manage and lead at an executive level
• Strategic expertise that demonstrates the ability to differentiate between operational and strategic matters, to review strategy constructively and openly, and contribute to effective decision making
• Financial and legal knowledge that is sufficient to accurately assess issues and circumstances and make decisions that minimise risk and enhance operations
• Risk management expertise that allows effective identification and mitigation of risk
• Managing people and achieving change – competence in current management practice on engagement, strategic vision and community collaboration and communication
