Job Description

The Organisation:

The Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG) is a religious congregation of Catholic women who endeavour to advance the reign of God by engaging in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

An exciting opportunity has become available within the Institute to join the team in Leichhardt as a Heritage Collections Project Officer on a 1 year contract.

This contract can be accommodated for full time hours or part time hours – you choose!

The Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Archives and Heritage, the main objective of this position is to audit and document, the ISMAPNG heritage collections. This role carries out project-based tasks and will focus upon the textile collection and some areas of the small heritage collection. It may also involve some travel when required.

Other areas of responsibility will include, but are not limited to:

  • Appraising objects in accordance with relevant policies
  • Accession and document the heritage collection to professional museum collection standards by cataloguing, photographing, and labelling objects
  • Creating and updating collection database records to a high standard to maintain provenance and significance
  • Ensuring the safety and security of all material within the collections by monitoring storage and environmental conditions, by using appropriate housings, by storing appropriately and by identifying priorities for conservation treatment
  • Participating in activities to increase access and promote the collections. This may include developing online content, preparing material for publication, and giving presentations when required.

Your Capabilities:

To be successful in this role, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of museum collections management
  • Experience with object handling
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • An ability to work accurately with strong attention to detail
  • A high level written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of general preservation principles
  • The ability to work collaboratively under the direction of the Manager, Archives and Heritage
  • The ability to work independently, with initiative and flexibility
  • A proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience using collection management databases (experience with Emu preferred).

Your Qualifications:

You will need to hold a tertiary qualification in museum studies or similar and be eligible for membership of a professional body.

On offer is a salary commensurate with your experience. Working hours are Monday to Friday with flexible working arrangements available.  There is an option for this position to be full time, or if you are looking for part-time hours, this could also be accommodated.
