A voluntary Sydney based NFP Non-Executive Director (NED) role which requires lived experience of disability, and involves providing strategic guidance, governance oversight, and fiduciary responsibility at Board level. A focus on strategic framework for early childhood services as well as disability service delivery and advocacy, monitoring performance, and ensuring financial sustainability while upholding values and supporting culture. The role requires strong ethics, business acumen, and teamwork for robust board discussions and accountability to stakeholders.

Organisation: St Anthony’s Family Care (SAFC), Croydon, NSW, 2132
Reports To: The Board of Directors and Members of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (SOSJ)

We deliver a range of services at our purpose-built facility in Croydon, Sydney, where we nurture and support children and young adults of all abilities to achieving their hopes and dreams and so enabling them to lead fulfilling lives. The Role:
This is a voluntary governance role, serving on the Board of Directors to provide independent oversight, strategic leadership, and ensure the organisation’s long-term sustainability and accountability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Governance: Set strategic direction, approve business plans, and ensure alignment with our mission.
- Performance Oversight: Monitor organisational performance, financial health, safeguarding and risk management.
- CEO & Management: Appoint, support, mentor, and evaluate the performance of the CEO.
- Financial Stewardship: Ensure robust financial controls, review budgets, and oversee financial sustainability.
- Ethical Leadership: Champion strong governance, ethical conduct, and a positive organisational culture.
- Stakeholder Engagement: one or more responsibilities in working with SOSJ, SAFC staff, participants and community.
- Advocacy: Actively advocate for the rights and inclusion of young people with disabilities and external engagement/understanding of the barriers and opportunities for young people with disabilities.
- Board Contribution: Actively participate in meetings, contribute expertise in the disability sector, serve on committees, and engage in professional development.
Key Competencies & Skills:
- Strong understanding of NFP governance, industry compliance across both early childhood services and disability services (particularly NDIS), legal obligations, and financial management.
- Relevant expertise and understanding of NDIS policies and service delivery framework
- Lived experience of disability
- Ability to ask challenging questions and provide constructive critique.
- High ethical standards, integrity, and commitment to the organisation’s values, culture and mission.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
Expectation of commitment (minimum)
- Attendance at monthly meeting in Croydon (2 hours p/m)
- Preparation for monthly meeting (approx. 2 hours p/m)
- Subcommittee membership (approx. 2-hour p/m)
- SOSJ Boards Formation Day (1 Saturday per year)
- Attendance and support for fundraisers
- Attendance at Board and joint staff functions (3-4 occasions per year)
- Professional reading as required
- Governance Professional Development as require
- Online Child Protection Course via board portal (about 2 hours)
- Online Disability Rights Course via board portal (about 2 hours)
- 4-hour in-service orientation at Croydon during business hours.
- Hold a current NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC) and NDIS Worker Check (NDISWC) and be willing to consent to relevant probity screening prior to Board appointment.
Note: all directors are required to be listed as a ‘Responsible Person’ on the ACNC Register and as a director on the ASIC Register.
