Catholic Diocese of Wagga Wagga

Located within Wiradjuri country in the Riverina and Yorta Yorta country in the southwestern district of New South Wales, the Diocese of Wagga Wagga stretches from Khancoban in the east to Griffith and Yenda in the west. Populated with both large and small towns, it is home to some of Australia’s richest and most picturesque countryside.
The Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers are significant geographical features of the area with the eastern border of the Diocese lying in the mountainous regions of the Great Dividing Range.

Established in 1917, the Diocese of Wagga Wagga has a rich faith tradition; our faith communities are nourished and sustained by the sacramental life of the church administered and accessed through 31 parishes,  29 schools – 24 primary and 5 secondary, and support services offered by Centacare throughout the diocese.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Safeguarding Officer is required to provide training, policy support and guidance to diocesan agencies, and entities across the Catholic Diocese of Wagga Wagga:

  • to support the implementation of policies and procedures to promote the safety and protection of children, young people and people experiencing vulnerability
  • to strengthen compliance with the NSW Child Safe Standards and National Catholic Safeguarding Standards. Across the Diocese, the safety and protection of children, young people and adults experiencing vulnerability is paramount. This role will contribute to strengthening the efforts of clergy, employees and volunteers to meet moral, ethical and statutory obligations and a duty of care in relation to safeguarding children, young people or adults experiencing vulnerability.

The role requires a person with a firm grasp of safeguarding policy implementation and a skilful and engaging training manner.

Essential Requirements 

  • High level of integrity, honesty and confidentiality, with an awareness and appreciation of Catholic Social Teaching
  • High level of commitment to quality
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively within and across departments, agencies, ministries and parishes of the Catholic Diocese of Wagga Wagga
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • A minimum 2 years experience in Human Resources or related field or a relevant tertiary degree in social work, social sciences or teaching or other relevant qualification
  • Collaborative teamwork skills coupled with the ability to work independently
  • Flexibility – willingness to work outside of hours where required
  • National Co-ordinated Criminal History Check (essential)
  • Working with Children Check (essential)
  • Current NSW Driver’s Licence
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritise
