Job Description
At Mary MacKillop Place, every visitor encounter is an opportunity to extend welcome, share meaning, and invite connection.
We are seeking Volunteer Museum Tour Guides who can help bring to life the story and mission of Saint Mary MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods for the many people who visit our site each year.
This role at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney is about more than sharing historical information. It is about helping visitors engage with a living legacy of hospitality, service, courage, and hope. Through guided tours and conversations, volunteers help create an environment where people feel welcomed, included, and inspired – whether they arrive as pilgrims, tourists, school groups, parish communities, or local visitors simply seeking a moment of reflection.
The Role:Â Museum Tour Guides support the mission of Mary MacKillop Place by:
- Welcoming visitors to the museum and historic site
- Leading guided tours for groups and individuals
- Sharing stories connected to Mary MacKillop, Julian Tenison Woods, and the Josephite tradition
- Creating engaging, respectful, and reflective visitor experiences
- Encouraging curiosity, conversation, and connection
- Assisting visitors with questions and general information
- Supporting museum staff and fellow volunteers as part of a collaborative team
Who We’re Looking For: We welcome volunteers who:
- Enjoy engaging with people from diverse backgrounds
- Have an appreciation for the mission and values of Mary MacKillop
- Communicate warmly and confidently with groups
- Value hospitality, dignity, inclusion, and respectful service
- Have an interest in history, spirituality, education, heritage, or storytelling
- Are reliable, thoughtful, and community-minded
Previous tour guide experience is welcome but not essential. What matters most is a willingness to learn, connect with others, and help visitors feel genuinely welcomed.
Training & Formation:Â Volunteers will receive extensive training and ongoing support, including:
- Museum history and site knowledge
- The mission and legacy of Mary MacKillop Place
- Tour guiding and storytelling techniques
- Visitor engagement and group facilitation
- Safe practices around exhibits and artifacts
- Opportunities to shadow experienced guides will also be provided.
Why Volunteer With Us? Volunteering at Mary MacKillop Place offers the opportunity to:
- Contribute to a mission-driven organisation
- Help preserve and share an important Australian story
- Create meaningful experiences for visitors
- Meet people from around Australia and the world
- Grow confidence in communication and public speaking
- Be part of a welcoming and supportive community
