Mercy Education Limited is seeking expressions of interest from accomplished, values-led leaders to join its Board as Non-Executive Directors. This is a distinctive opportunity to help shape the future of a significant Catholic education ministry, bringing strategic judgement, contemporary governance capability and a deep commitment to mission-led education.
Responsive to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the vision of the Venerable Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Education Limited is an incorporated ministry of Mercy Ministry Companions and is responsible for the governance and operation of thirteen Mercy colleges in South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. Further information is available at www.mercy.edu.au.
The Role
Board Directors provide strategic oversight of Mercy Education’s mission, performance, financial stewardship, risk and compliance, with a particular focus on child-safe governance and the continued vitality of Catholic education across the Mercy tradition.
Directors attend at least six Board meetings each year, contribute to relevant Committee work, participate in formation and governance activities, and undertake engagement with at least one Mercy College.
Board meetings are usually held on Friday mornings. In-person attendance is preferred, with online participation available by agreement with the Chair. Meeting schedules are set with regard to Director availability.
Directors receive an annual stipend plus superannuation and are reimbursed for reasonable expenses approved in advance.
Mercy Education welcomes candidates who bring diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, together with a demonstrated commitment to Mercy Education’s mission, vision and values and to the ministerial works of Mercy Ministry Companions as an ecclesial entity within the Catholic Church.
The Board is particularly interested in candidates with capability in education, diversity and inclusion, IT transformation and cyber security, child safety and safeguarding, workforce strategy, organisational culture, executive leadership, financial strategy or long-term stewardship.
Strong candidates will demonstrate governance experience, sound judgement, collaborative leadership, suitability for service in a highly regulated education environment and commitment to Catholic education. Experience in education, Church ministries, early childhood, school or special education, or other complex systems will be regarded favourably.
Expression of Interest Process
Applications will be acknowledged by email. Shortlisted candidates are expected to be contacted in late July for an interview, either in person or online, and all candidates will be advised of the outcome.
To apply, please submit a cover letter and current resume to Susan Miller, Company Secretary, at [email protected]. Your cover letter should outline your governance experience, alignment with Mercy Education’s mission and potential contribution to the priority capability areas.
Personal information provided by candidates will be used to assess expressions of interest and administer the appointment process. It will be handled in accordance with Mercy Education’s Privacy Policy, available on the Mercy Education Ltd website.
Mercy Education places the highest priority on student safety. Preferred candidates will be required to complete a National Criminal Records check, the Working with Children Check that applies to their state of residence, and any further probity, suitability or safeguarding checks reasonably required for appointment.
For enquiries or reasonable adjustments to participate in the EOI process, contact Susan Miller at [email protected] or Justin Groenewaldt, HR Manager, at [email protected].
Applications close at 5.00pm on 24 July 2026.
