The film is set in Oklahoma, hence the pronunciation of the central character’s name, the accent and contraction of Amaziah.
Amziah is a successful and well-liked beekeeper, played with jovial strength by McConnaughey. He also plays in a bluegrass band, performing to appreciative audiences.
While there are some beekeeping sequences, the screenplay turns to crime and police investigation with someone stealing Amziah’s honey barrels.
Amziah sets up the machinery, helping the police to discover the thieves.
Then he encounters a young woman, Kateri (first film for Native American actress Angelina LookingGlass), whom he used to foster. She has returned, works in a diner, but is happy to be involved in the beekeeping and committed to the investigation.
But, there is a big business villain behind the whole enterprise –and we see Kurt Russell at his most villainous.
