Queensland’s Catholic bishops have congratulated new Premier David Crisafulli and the Liberal National Party on winning the state election on Saturday.

In a statement, the bishops – Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge and Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Norton SVD, Cairns Bishop Joseph Caddy, Rockhampton Bishop Michael McCarthy, Toowoomba Bishop Kenneth Howell and Townsville Bishop Timothy Harris – said they wished the new Government “well in all that lies ahead”.

“As leaders of the Catholic community, we look forward to working with the new Government to serve the common good of all Queenslanders,” the bishops said.

They also thanked the outgoing Labor government and its leader, Steven Miles, “for their service to the state”.

“Since the founding of Queensland in 1859, Church and State have partnered to serve the entire community, especially the vulnerable,” the bishops said.

“Today it is more important than ever for the Church and the State Government work together in a spirit of mutual respect in order to address the pressing issues facing our communities both urban and rural.

“There is much for the Government to do, but no government can do everything. That is why genuine collaboration with grassroots communities like the Church is not just preferable but essential.”
