Hope, faith, and a whole lot of fun filled the air in Newcastle on Sunday as more than 1000 people gathered to launch Maitland-Newcastle Diocese’s Jubilee Year celebrations. Source: MNnews.Today.
The day began with people from across the diocese walking alongside Maitland-Newcastle Bishop Michael Kennedy from Nobbys Beach to Sacred Heart Cathedral, making a “Pilgrimage of Hope”.
The pilgrimage walk was followed by Mass and then a festival of family activities, free food, and connection.
Bishop Kennedy said he was proud to see the community unite and embrace their shared faith.
“The turnout today has just blown me away, especially the big number that turned up for the pilgrim walk,” Bishop Kennedy said.
“Walking together and sharing stories was just really special.”
Bishop Kennedy was equally impressed with the attendance at Mass.
“The cathedral was packed during Mass. When I walked in at the start and just saw how full it was and heard everyone singing that amazing hymn, it was a great example of people being together with God, with spirits soaring,” he said.
Event attendee Eleanor found the day to be incredibly inspiring.
“Seeing events like today is so reassuring that the Catholic Church is alive and well,” she said.
“It’s wonderful to know we have people who are passionate about the faith and want to support one another.
“Seeing so many people come together is a real statement on what this year is about.”
The diocese’s director of mission and evangelisation James Camden said he hoped the launch would encourage communities across the diocese to celebrate the Jubilee
“As we continue through this Jubilee Year together, I hope everyone discovers the joy of connection and our shared faith,” he said.
The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle will be running a number of other initiatives in 2025 to celebrate the Jubilee Year. To find out more, visit www.mn.catholic.org.au/JubileeYear2025.
