The newly named grand hall at Campion College (Campion College)

Campion College, the liberal arts college in Western Sydney, has honoured the late Cardinal George Pell by naming its grand hall after him.

The George Cardinal Pell Grand Hall was unveiled during an event commemorating the life and legacy of Cardinal Pell held at the college on Wednesday.

As part of the event, guests also celebrated the launch of George Cardinal Pell – Pax Invictis, A Biography, written by journalist and commentator Tess Livingstone.

The biography provides an in-depth exploration of Cardinal Pell’s journey – from his early years in Australia to his influential role as the Vatican’s treasurer. It recounts his steadfast faith through his trials, wrongful imprisonment, ultimate exoneration and his death in January 2023.

A highlight of the evening was an address by former prime minister John Howard, with responses from Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP and former prime minister Tony Abbott.

Their speeches paid tribute to Cardinal Pell’s dedication to faith, justice, and public service.

“What he gave to the Christian religion and very particularly to the Catholic Church, was a lifetime of service and devotion. He was an intellectual inspiration,” Mr Howard said.

“His tenacity and his strength and his resilience would’ve broken most of us, but not him. And he was sustained in that by his resolute faith.”

In The Australian today, Ms Livingstone writes of the Campion College event. She quotes Archbishop Fisher, who recounted a report he’d received about a child in the United States who had a miraculous recovery following intercessory prayer through Cardinal Pell.

Archbishop Fisher told the gathering that an 18-month-old boy, Vincent, had fallen into a pool in Arizona.

“He stopped breathing for 52 minutes. His parents prayed for the intercession of Cardinal Pell.

“The boy survived and came off life support free of any damage to brain or lungs or heart. He’s fine now and his doctors are calling it a miracle.”
