Last week, Pope Francis issued a decree approving Peter To Rot’s canonisation, 30 years after Pope John Paul II beatified him and started the process to sainthood.

The late Peter To Rot was a catechist from Papua New Guinea’s New Britain island, and is lauded as a martyr after he was executed by Japanese soldiers during World War II for practising Catholicism.

“It’s something that words can’t explain,” Peter Senat told ABC News Radio’s Pacific Beat program.

“I’m humbled that my grandfather is going to be a catholic saint, the first from Papua New Guinea and the Oceania region.”

Mr Senat said he’d like to see his grandfather become the patron saint of matrimony.
