Mr Bull was awarded the honour “for significant service to Catholic education, and to Indigenous education support”. It comes ahead of his planned retirement on July 4.

Mr Bull began his teaching career at Mercedes College in 1979 before taking on leadership positions at Mercedes College, St Brigid’s College in Lesmurdie, Lumen Christi College, and La Salle College.

Over the past six years he has served as both deputy executive director and executive director of CEWA, leading a system of 160 schools serving over 83,000 children across the State.

“On behalf of the Catholic Education Commission, CEWA offices, schools, and the wider Catholic education community I want to warmly congratulate Wayne on this honour,” Catholic Education Commission WA chair Eva Skira said.

“It is a reflection of the high esteem in which Wayne is held by his colleagues, education leaders, and the community, and is recognition of a decades long career characterised by compassion, faithfulness, and dedication to enriching the lives of generations of young people,” Ms Skira said.

Mr Bull said he was “extremely humbled and honoured” to receive the honour.

“I have been so fortunate to have worked with so many extraordinary teachers, support staff and leaders during my career and this honour really reflects the wonderful position that Catholic Education holds within the community of Western Australia.

“I have been privileged to work in our Catholic system which is full of faithful and dedicated staff who provide families with the choice of a quality, faith-based education.”

Meanwhile, other notable Catholics who received honours for their service to the Church yesterday include former Australian ambassador to the Holy See, John McCarthy (Member of the Order of Australia); Sr Carmel Moore, Sr Mary Ryan and Fr Allan Winter (Medal of the Order of Australia).
