Archbishop-elect Anthony Ireland will be officially installed as the new Archbishop of Hobart during a Solemn Liturgical Reception at St Mary’s Cathedral in Hobart at 11am on Tuesday, August 12.

At the beginning of the Mass, Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles Balvo will read out the Papal Bull, announcing Pope Leo XIV’s choice of Archbishop Ireland as the 12th Archbishop of Hobart.

The event will be attended by clergy and bishops from around the country, as well as dignitaries including the Governor and representatives from the Tasmanian Government and the Opposition, and many of the Catholic faithful of Tasmania.

On the evening prior to the Mass, Solemn Vespers will be celebrated for the installation of the new Archbishop, on Monday, August 11, beginning at 5.30pm at St Mary’s Cathedral.

The Vatican announced on June 20 that Pope Leo XIV had appointed the then Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne as the next Archbishop of Hobart.

“I’m very much looking forward to being among you,” Archbishop-elect Ireland said to the Catholics of Tasmania following his appointment.

“It is with a spirit of service and devotion that I come to the Archdiocese of Hobart.

“I kindly ask for your prayers – for me, and for all those I will soon be blessed to serve and guide.”

Archbishop-elect Ireland was born and raised in Caulfield, in Melbourne’s south-east. He was ordained to the priesthood at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne in 1987 and went on to serve in several parishes. Pope Francis appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne in 2021.

Archbishop-elect Ireland is the twelfth Bishop, and eleventh Archbishop, of Hobart.

Both the Liturgical Reception and Solemn Vespers will be livestreamed via the Archdiocese of Hobart’s YouTube channel.
