Archbishop Shane Mackinlay (ACBC/Giovanni Portelli)

Brisbane Archbishop Shane Mackinlay has been elected President of the Australian Catholic University Corporation.

ACU Chancellor Martin Daubney and Vice-Chancellor and President Zlatko Skrbis welcomed the appointment and extended their congratulations on behalf of the university community.

“Archbishop Mackinlay is a leading voice in both the Catholic world and broader public life. We congratulate him on his election as Corporation President and are confident he will bring his wisdom and integrity to the role,” Professor Skrbis said.

“Archbishop Mackinlay brings a wealth of experience and is deeply committed to the mission of the Church and the transformative power of Catholic higher education.”

Archbishop Mackinlay was ordained as Bishop of Sandhurst in 2019, after 28 years of ministry as a priest of the Ballarat Diocese. He served in several parishes and completed a master and doctorate in philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.

Before being appointed bishop, he taught philosophy for 20 years and was Master of Catholic Theological College in the University of Divinity, Melbourne, for almost a decade.

He was Vice-President of the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia and will be one of the Australian delegates to the forthcoming Synod for a Synodal Church. He was appointed Archbishop of Brisbane earlier this year.

Archbishop Mackinlay succeeds Brisbane Archbishop Emeritus Mark Coleridge, who served as ACU Corporation President for many years with distinction and dedication.

“We thank Archbishop Emeritus Coleridge for his leadership and unwavering commitment to ACU’s mission and values,” Professor Skrbis said.
