University of Notre Dame Australia Vice Chancellor Francis Campbell will leave the university later in the year to take up a new role overseas.
Professor Campbell, who joined Notre Dame from St Mary’s University in London in January 2020, shared the news with staff in a joint message issued with Chancellor Paul McClintock.
Professor Campbell said that with the first phase of Notre Dame’s current strategic plan concluding this year, the timing was right for new leadership to guide the university into its next chapter.
“The journey of this university has been a remarkable one over the past 30-plus years, and its future will continue to be marked by commitment, dedication and grace,” Professor Campbell said.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the Notre Dame community for their tireless commitment to higher education. That commitment changes the lives of our students and it goes to the heart of what a Catholic university is, which commits to a wider formation and the pursuit of truth.”
Mr McClintock paid tribute to Professor Campbell’s leadership, noting his role in expanding the university’s disciplines and course offerings, establishing its research agenda and capability, increasing student enrolments to record levels, and broadening Notre Dame’s national and global impact.
These achievements have contributed to strong financial performance and long‑term institutional stability.
“Francis has demonstrated exceptional vision and steadfast commitment to Catholic education,” Chancellor McClintock said.
“While we will formally celebrate his contribution later in the year, we are grateful that he will continue to lead the University through 2026.”
