The international day is marked each year on February 8. It falls on the feast of St Josephine Bakhita, the Canossian sister who overcame a traumatic childhood kidnapping and many brutal years as a slave to find peace, safety and freedom with the sisters in Venice early last century.
This year’s theme, “Peace Begins with Dignity: A Global Call to End Human Trafficking”, draws inspiration from Pope Leo XIV’s reminder that the true peace found in love is sustained where human dignity is upheld.
A global online pilgrimage of prayer and awareness against human trafficking is taking place today at 9pm AEDT. This virtual event will connect participants across continents and time zones in a shared spiritual journey.
ACRATH’s executive officer Sarah Puls said the prayer vigil and the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking hold “special significance in the ACRATH calendar, and we invite you to join our global community in marking these important events”.
“As we begin 2026, let us come together in prayer and action, reaffirming our commitment to end human trafficking and build a world free from exploitation.”
ACRATH has resources to enhance prayer, reflection and action available on its website here.
