Fr David “Dave” Callaghan MGL has been elected Moderator of the MGL priests and brothers for the next four years, succeeding Fr Stephen Fletcher MGL.
Originally from Perth, Fr Callaghan has been a member of the MGL for 26 years and is parish priest at Holy Spirit Parish in Darwin.
A statement from the MGL announcing the appointment describes Fr Fletcher as having “gratefully accepted” the transition and as “very confident that Fr David is well equipped to take the congregation forward”.
The leadership change comes as the MGL marks its 40th year, with missions in Canberra, Melbourne, Darwin and Sydney, as well as the Philippines and Indonesia.
The community now has more than 40 priests and perpetually vowed brothers, with more than 30 young men in formation.
Dedicated to preaching the love of God expressed through the Cross of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, the MGL has a particular focus on young people, those on the margins, and building faith communities as missionary disciples.
The priests and brothers are now seeking “to respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit” as they consider how to live their charism “in the Church and the world today”.
For Fr Callaghan, that discernment now comes with a new responsibility: leading the MGL into its next chapter.
