Two new map layers are now available for each diocese and parish on the Australian Catholic Mapping Online 2021 Census maps, providing information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics and the birthplaces and languages of Australian Catholics. Source: National Centre for Pastoral Research.

Launched publicly ahead of National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday, both layers allocate a similar number of parishes or dioceses to one of five coloured ranges to allow users to quickly show where the percentages of Catholics with a particular characteristic are located across the country or a diocese.

The colours move from dark, representing locations with the highest proportions of Catholics with a characteristic, to lighter colours, representing the lesser proportions.

Clicking on a coloured location on the layer displays a popup containing further relevant Census information. Hovering over bars or segments in popup charts will reveal the associated figures.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics layer was developed in response to a request from Craig Arthur of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Commission (NATSICC) which represents more than 135,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics.

“To be able to see the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics across the country is a blessing and a very useful tool that will empower NATSICC and our Aboriginal and Islander Catholic Ministries,” Mr Arthur said.

The new layer shows the percentage of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Catholics by diocese or parish. Locations with the highest percentages are shaded dark green and lower proportions are coloured in lighter shades of green and cream.

The map shows a group of dioceses with the highest proportions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics are in the north-west of Australia whereas a band of dioceses across the southern mainland have some of the smallest percentages.

Parish and diocesan popups contain information about the population, the percentage used in the layer and major language groups used at home. The “Australian Indigenous” language group used in the popup represents more than 150 active languages that were identified in the 2021 Census.

Diocesan popups on the National Map display a chart showing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics by Age Group. This information is not available for parishes.
