More than 200 people attended the ceremony, which recognised Ms Newton and 37 other passionate and worthy nominees.

Attendees at the event could see the joy and shock on Ms Newton’s face as Maitland-Newcastle Bishop Michael Kennedy congratulated her.

“I am still getting over the shock and the stun of it because there were just so many wonderful people there,” Ms Newton said.

“They all do such important work in our diocese, and I honestly thought there were more worthy people than myself.

“I am very humbled and shocked that I was chosen.”

Ms Newton was selected as the award winner because of her dedication to the Myall Coast and parish. She’s been a part of the Myall Coast Parish and St Brigid’s Church in Bulahdelah all her life. During that time, the 57-year-old has played a vital role in supporting the parish to thrive.

Established in 2015, the award aims to celebrate and honour local women who demonstrate exceptional leadership within the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese and embody the spirit of St Mary Magdalene.

Event organisers said it was great to see parishes come together and celebrate not only the women in the diocese, but one another.
