Her mum, dad and sister – surrounded by family, friends and supporters – turned the sod at a site in Carina on September 16.

Helèna died from a pulmonary embolism on October 13, 2019.

Her mum, Fiona McIlwain, co-founder of Helèna’s House, said it was an emotional day for her and her family.

“We felt surrounded by love, but at the same time, it was bittersweet because Helèna, who’s the heart of this project, wasn’t there with us,” she said.

“It wasn’t a celebration because it’s hard to truly celebrate after losing her, but there was a lot of joy, a lot of positivity.

“I felt determined to have Sr Angela (Mary Doyle) there to bless the land, to ensure everything started with love and peace.

“Helèna’s House will be a place of love, care, and community.”

Mrs McIlwain has hopes to have the house built in the next year.

“It’s in a fantastic spot – close to shops, a library, and a park, all important for the therapy and independence of the young adults who will live there,” she said.

“The house itself has great accessibility, with a corner location and two entries: one for the young adults, and another for professionals who might visit.”

She said it was all a “massive achievement” for BestLife Foundation, where Helèna worked and which operates the house mates program.

“Isolation is one of the biggest challenges young adults with disabilities face,” Mrs McIlwain said.

“Helèna’s House will offer young adults the chance to form friendships and live more independently, which will have a huge positive impact on their families as well.

“When parents feel confident that their child is happy and thriving outside the home, it lifts an enormous weight.

“Helèna was passionate about that – she believed everyone deserved the chance to live a full, connected life, just like her and her friends.”
