Geraldine Hawkes (The Southern Cross)

Ms Hawkes assumed the role on October 8 following the conclusion of Brad Hocking’s term and the official handing over of the presidency.

Ms Hawkes’ formal involvement with the society in South Australia began in 2020, when she became a member of the Salisbury Conference.

Her connection to the society, however, has deep roots as her father was an active member of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Glasgow, where Ms Hawkes was born.

She established strong relationships with the society during her employment with the Adelaide Archdiocese, leading spiritual formation and leadership sessions for various groups.

Her extensive experience across a broad range of Church and community organisations has further prepared her for the state president role.

Ms Hawkes’ vision for the charity embraces a “spirituality of encounter,” ensuring that everyone who engages with the St Vincent de Paul Society is positively affected.

“I will be working with others to increase the Society’s presence and practical support alongside people burdened by social, economic or spiritual poverty through new models of companionship in local neighbourhoods,” Ms Hawkes said.

“We will also ensure greater advocacy for a more equitable sharing of life’s resources, especially for children.”

Mr Hocking expressed his enthusiasm for Ms Hawkes’ appointment.

“Geraldine has been a coach and an inspirational force throughout my presidency, particularly in guiding how we engage with the people we assist,” Mr Hocking said.

“I am excited to see how she will lead the society forward in its Mission, and she has my full support.”
