Her role, which begins on January 6,  will be interim as the board seeks a permanent executive director to replace outgoing executive director Ross Fox, who will finish at the end of the year.

Patrick McArdle, chair of the archdiocese’s education board, expressed enthusiasm about Ms Betts’ appointment.

“We are incredibly grateful to Pam for her willingness to step in and ensure a smooth transition to our new governance arrangements,” Dr McArdle said.

“Her extensive experience in Catholic education will provide invaluable leadership during this critical time.”

Ms Betts comes to the role with a strong background, having previously served as the executive director of Catholic Education Brisbane.

After retirement, she contributed by taking on board roles, including chair of Catholic Education Sandhurst Limited and a director for Catholic Schools Diocese of Lismore Limited.

“Her appointment assures stable leadership in early 2025 and reinforces our commitment to continuity in management for our schools,” Dr McArdle added. “Her skills and insights will be essential as we navigate our strategic priorities.”

The board will advertise the executive director position this week. It aims for a suitable candidate later this year, though a transition period will be necessary.

On November 24, 2024, coinciding with the Feast of Christ the King, Canberra-Goulburn Archbishop Christopher Prowse will commission the board at St Christopher’s Cathedral.
