Synod Member Emily Stirton with the SYNOD24 action plans (The Catholic Leader)

The session was guided by Brisbane’s Vicar General Fr Peter Dillon and Synod co-ordinator Steph Jorna, who led discussions using the same “Conversations in the Spirit” method used at the archdiocesan synod six months ago.

“These conversations not only require trust, they require us to truly discern how our God wants us to respond. I always leave feeling refreshed and close to God,” Emily Stirton, one of the youngest members present, said.

“As a young person, I feel truly listened to, consulted with, and valued on the issues that matter to our Church.”

The group discerned what thoughts and responses should be offered for the wider Church’s consideration.

Together, the synod members explored pressing questions such as: Which actions in the SYNOD24 plan should be top priorities? What first steps can we take as an archdiocese – and in our local communities – to bring them to life?

One of the main priorities named was from Decree 2: Choosing Repentance – Seeking Healing, which focuses on supporting and walking with survivors of abuse.

Other key themes included formation in mission, co-responsibility, leadership, and deepening understanding of synodality.

Pat Mullins, a synod writer, said the conversation at his table explored the role of lay leaders—whether as teachers, prophets, or visionaries.

“We reflected on the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and the right of laypeople to bring their insights and concerns to their pastors,” he said.

“Lay leadership formation should empower people to take initiative, propose ideas, and act for the good of the Church.”

The group also emphasised the importance of subsidiarity – that decisions should be made as close as possible to those affected.

This consultation is just one of many steps toward implementing the SYNOD24 action plans.
