Planting begins after the Season of Creation Mass in Sandhurst Diocese (Kerry Stone)

Caritas Australia’s Catholic Earthcare program is calling on schools across the country to take part in a new initiative that brings faith and sustainability together through the new Creation Changemakers campaign.

This year’s mission is to create a Garden of Peace – a living symbol of hope and harmony within school communities, inspired by the 2025 Season of Creation theme, Peace with Creation.

Whether it’s a flourishing garden, a patch of lawn, or even a classroom corner, every school can participate and cultivate a space that reflects care for our common home.

Registered schools will also receive a comprehensive campaign guide, a Garden of Peace prayer, and a dove template for students to write and display their prayers for peace. Ready-made social media templates will also enable participants to amplify their school’s voice and inspire the wider community.

As an early bird bonus, the first 50 schools to register will receive 40 pairs of gardening gloves to kickstart their Garden of Peace.

By joining the Creation Changemakers campaign, schools will:

  • Become part of a global movement for ecological justice
  • Deepen the connection between faith and sustainability
  •  Align with the Laudato Si’ Action Plan and Catholic Social Teaching
  • Access a pathway to Catholic Earthcare accreditation
  • Empower students to lead on ecological justice

In addition, Caritas Australia invites students to enter the Catholic Earthcare Art Competition 2025, exploring the theme Peace with Creation.

Open to both primary and secondary students, entries close on September 10, with winners receiving art supply vouchers and recognition in both Bishop’s Choice and People’s Choice categories.

“We hope our new Creation Changemakers campaign empowers Catholic schools to take part in the Season of Creation with actions big and small – whether that’s creating a garden of peace, entering our art competition or coming together in prayer,” Nicole Dobrohotoff, Community Partnerships Associate Director at Caritas Australia, said.

“In doing so we may collectively nurture a generation of changemakers committed to ecological justice, compassion, and hope.”
