The Sandhurst Diocese is transforming the once-vacant corner of Short and High streets into a vibrant precinct, blending sustainable architecture, landscaped public spaces, modern offices, and a flagship tourism tenant.
The precinct is set to become a hub of activity and a new drawcard for visitors to the cathedral area.
Diocesan Administrator Fr Brian Boyle recently visited the site to check on progress – a rare inspection from someone better known for pastoral duties than hard hats and construction tape – much to the respectful amusement of the builders.
Sandhurst Diocese’s acting business manager, Greg Westbrook, said the project was on schedule, with the demolition of an old parish hall and a retail site complete and earthworks for the new building foundations underway for the next stage of construction.
Once complete, the Cathedral Square development will include office space for diocesan and Catholic Education staff, a new parish hall, landscaped community areas, and a flagship chocolatier to bring jobs and activity to the precinct.
