Franciscans from across Parramatta Diocese and beyond gathered in a spirit of joy and fraternity to welcome the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, Br Massimo Fusarelli, during his recent visit to Australia. Source: Catholic Outlook.

It was a rare chance to hear directly from the 121st successor of St Francis of Assisi.

Sr Pia Galea OSC, a Poor Clare Sister from Richmond, was among many Franciscan community members and associates – Catholic and Anglican – across New South Wales who came together in Waverley for the occasion last month.

The group, called “Cords Connecting” meet about four times a year.

Sr Pia said the atmosphere was warm and prayerful, with religious and lay Franciscans alike gathering to listen, share, and be renewed in their common calling.

Br Massimo was accompanied by Br John Wong, Definitor General for the Asia-Oceania region. Together, they spoke about the recent international Franciscan document, “Francis: A Seed for Eternal Life”.

The document, signed by leaders of Franciscan Orders, has been shared with communities around the world.

Guests who attended the visit were especially moved by the document’s closing challenge: “The seed of Francis continues to germinate. It is up to us to make it bear fruit.”

The message resonated deeply with those present, encouraging a renewed commitment to Gospel simplicity, fraternity, and service to those on the margins.

During the visit, a Franciscan icon of the Season of Creation, written by Melbourne-based Franciscan, Sr Mary Burke FMM, provided the perfect backdrop to the occasion. The display was admired by Br Massimo, who expressed his appreciation for this visible sign of devotion and identity.
