The launch explored how the program will empower students to grow as people of service, living out a faith that seeks justice, compassion and care for others in their communities.
Supported by partner agencies including Caritas Australia, Catholic Mission, Catholic Healthcare, Jesuit Refugee Service, Jesuit Social Services, Marist 180, St Vincent de Paul, St Lucy’s School and St Edmund’s College, the program will connect students with meaningful opportunities for service, advocacy and outreach.
CSPD Mission Partner Ryan Reyes said the program invites students to deepen their understanding of faith through action and service.
“The St Mary MacKillop Faith in Action Award encourages students to see the world through the lens of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching, and to respond with compassion, courage and a commitment to justice,” he said.
Students in Years 6, 8 and 10 will take part in the year-long program, supported by a teacher-mentor who accompanies them throughout the journey. Mentors will provide guidance, encouragement and opportunities for reflection as students explore how they are called to serve others.
By participating in the program, students are encouraged to follow the example of Saint Mary MacKillop, who urged others to “never see a need without doing something about it,” and to become young people who bring hope and justice to the world.
Throughout the year, students will document their experiences through an e-journal and e-portfolio, reflecting on their encounters and learning as they respond to the needs of others with compassion and solidarity.
The award also strengthens existing social justice initiatives within schools and connects students with broader agency programs, including the Vinnies Service Medallion, creating partnerships that expand opportunities for meaningful service.
Students’ commitment to living their faith in action will be celebrated at a special award ceremony in December.
