St Francis Catholic College in Toowoomba Diocese has celebrated a significant milestone with a turning of the sod and Blessing of the site ceremony, officially marking the commencement of construction of the new Catholic college in Westbrook.
The ceremony formally acknowledges years of planning and preparation, signalling the transition from vision to construction of the much‑anticipated college, located not far from Toowoomba.
“The Turning of the Sod is a powerful symbol; ideas becoming reality, hope becoming action and commitment taking physical shape in the ground beneath our feet,” Dr Patrick Coughlan, Executive Director, Toowoomba Catholic Schools, said.
“This college is a key expression of our Toowoomba Catholic Schools vision – to be a leading diocese in educational achievement, innovation and reform.
“Building the college in Westbrook is a clear demonstration of our commitment to this growing community.
“St Francis Catholic College will provide a strong faith-based learning environment that supports student growth, excellence and wellbeing for generations to come.”
Michael McNab has been appointed as the builder for St Francis Catholic College, bringing extensive experience in delivering high-quality educational facilities across Queensland.
Chris Oakes, Foundation Principal of St Francis Catholic College, said the occasion was a deeply meaningful moment for the school community.
“It was wonderful to celebrate this milestone with our Bishop Ken Howell, Fr Bony Abraham and two of our foundation students and their families, who are the heart of our emerging school community. The community partnerships we are forging were also key to this event, with Westbrook Sports Club and Community Hall representatives in attendance.”
The ceremony was also attended by the Member for Condamine, Pat Weir and Mayor Geoff McDonald, councillors Kerry Shine and Tim McMahon and other senior members of the project partners and Toowoomba Catholic Schools.
St Francis Catholic College is scheduled to open in 2027 with Prep to Year 3 and Year 7 students being the first cohort, growing to a P-12 school by 2032.
