Jennifer Orre, director of Sydney Archdiocese’s Safeguarding and Ministerial Integrity Office, said the service gave practical expression to the theme of Safeguarding Sunday 2026, “Love Protects”.

“Safeguarding is not only about preventing harm; it also means responding with humility, compassion and care when harm has occurred,” she said.

“Our Healing and Support Service offers a respectful and welcoming place where people can be heard and receive counselling, pastoral and emotional support, and practical guidance tailored to their individual needs.

“There is no time limit on that support, and any spiritual assistance is entirely optional and guided by each person’s wishes.”

Catholics across Australia will mark Safeguarding Sunday on September 13.

In a statement marking the day, the Bishops Commission for Professional Standards and Safeguarding said that when communities prioritised the safety, dignity and wellbeing of children, young people and vulnerable adults, they embodied the love and care at the heart of the Gospel.

“‘Love Protects’ reminds us that genuine love is demonstrated through action,” said

“Safeguarding is an essential part of our mission and ministry. It calls each of us to be attentive, accountable and committed to ensuring that every person can participate in the life of the church safely and with confidence,” commission chair Bishop Greg Bennet said.
