National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council has released a resource kit for the Church’s celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday on July 7.
On that day, Catholics across Australia will honour and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of First Nations peoples to the Church.
The theme for this year is “Keep the Fire Burning – Strong in Faith”.
The kit includes resources for both First Nations and non-Indigenous congregations, youth activities and homily notes from Sydney Auxiliary Bishop Danny Meagher, who is a member of the Bishops Commission for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
In a statement on its website, NATSIIC said: “Our prayer is that this resource will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
“Through the prayers, reflections, and hymns included in this Liturgy, may we all be inspired to walk together in reconciliation, respect, and unity.
“As Pope Francis reminds us, we are called to be a Church that goes forth, embracing all cultures and peoples. Let us open our hearts to the wisdom and spirituality of our First Nations Peoples, recognising the presence of Christ in our stories and traditions.
“May this celebration be a moment of grace, healing, and transformation for all of us.”
NATSICC is also calling for nominations for the 2024 NATSICC Community Service Awards, which recognise people who make a significant difference in the lives of Australia’s First Nations people.
“Every day, in parishes, schools, organisations and Catholic ministries around Australia there are people working with and alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics to make a significant difference.
“They don’t ask for accolades or want to be in the spotlight, but these people need to be acknowledged for all they do.”
Nominations close on Saturday, June 15. Details: 2024 Service to Community Awards
