The celebration at St Anthony’s Parish, Noble Park, brought together parishioners, members of the Divine Word missionaries, clergy from across Melbourne, Fr Wang’s family and representatives of Melbourne’s Catholic Chinese community – a reflection of the cultural diversity that has shaped his ministry in Australia.
Originally from a small Catholic village in northern China, Fr Wang spent the past six months preparing for priesthood as a deacon in Noble Park, learning the routine of parish life and the practical work of ministry.
His experience there was such a significant part of his preparation that when he was asked where he would like to be ordained, St Anthony’s was the obvious answer.
Presided over by Broome Bishop Tim Norton SVD, the liturgy reflected Fr Wang’s heritage through hymns and readings in both English and Chinese.
He came to learn to be a priest in a parish and to do it in a place where it’s busy and multicultural and rich.
In his homily, Bishop Norton spoke about the nature of priestly leadership, reminding the congregation that it is grounded not in status but in service.
“Leadership is rooted in love for Jesus, love for others, as well as a willingness to serve selflessly,” he said.
Turning to the new priest, Bishop Norton encouraged him to look not just to other clergy but to the people around him as examples of authentic leadership.
“If you want to know about those things – leadership, love and service – you might look at us. But I would advise you to turn around and look at this group of people first.”
