The Holy See Press Office provided this health update yesterday, following the Pope’s surgery for pulmonary adenocarcinoma on October 13.

He was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Saturday, after five days in hospital.

The Pope appeared at the window of the Apostolic Palace on Sunday to greet the 15,000 people gathered in St Peter’s Square to welcome him and show their affection and support.

The Holy See Press Office said Pope Leo will hold his Wednesday General Audience this week in St Peter’s Square.

No further details are available at this stage, including whether Pope Leo will make his customary tour among the crowds in the popemobile.

Pope Leo will remain at the Vatican this week rather than travel to his residence in Castel Gandolfo, where, since the beginning of his pontificate, he usually visits on Monday and remains until Tuesday evening.

For the time being, the Pope will stay at the Vatican to continue his recovery. According to his surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, who performed the operation and spoke to Vatican News on Saturday, the recovery period should last about 10 days.

The Holy See Press Office is expected to provide further updates on the Pope’s other activities in the coming days.

No indication has yet been given as to whether the Pope will make his scheduled visit to Assisi on October 27.

He is due to conclude the event “Unarmed and Disarming Peace,” organised by the St Egidio Community to mark the 40th anniversary of the historic gathering known as the Spirit of Assisi, first held under Pope St John Paul II.
