Lia Finocchiaro is the NT’s 14th Chief Minister (Facebook-Lia Finocchiaro MLA)

Darwin Bishop Charles Gauci has extended his “prayers and hopes for the newly elected government of the Northern Territory” after the Country Liberal Party had a landslide election victory on Saturday.

After eight years in the political wilderness, and after winning just two seats in the 2016 election, the CLP has won at least 16 seats across the jurisdiction, including electorates that had been Territory Labor strongholds for decades in Darwin’s northern suburbs, ABC News reports.

Since 2016, the party has been steadily rebuilt under the leadership of Lia Finocchiaro, a born-and-bred Territory woman and former lawyer who will become the NT’s 14th chief minister.

Bishop Gauci said in a statement that the Church does not “align ourselves with any political party, but we stand firm in our commitment to the principles of the common good and the wellbeing of all who call this land home”.

“Our prayer is that those who now hold the responsibility of governing will be guided by principles that uphold the dignity of every person, fostering inclusivity and prosperity for all within our Territory,” Bishop Gauci said.

“The Northern Territory is a unique and diverse community, and its future should be shaped by wisdom, integrity, and a shared commitment to justice and respect.”

Bishop Gauci said he looks forward to “witnessing growth and positive change in the Territory” as the new government comes into office.

“We trust that those in leadership will work towards a future that benefits everyone—ensuring that no one is left behind, and that all voices are heard,” Bishop Gauci said.

“May the new government be blessed with discernment and strength as they take on the challenges ahead, and may their efforts contribute to the flourishing of our entire community.”
