On the day after the US presidential election, Archbishop Timothy Broglio has expressed the US Bishops’ prayers for President-elect Donald Trump and all members elected to represent the American people at the national, state, or local levels. Source: Vatican News.

In an interview with Vatican News, the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) said the Catholic Church is “not aligned with any political party,” adding that the US Bishops’ look forward to working with elected representatives to promote the common good.

“As Christians and as Americans,” he said, “we have a duty to treat each other with charity, respect, and civility, even if we may disagree on how to carry out matters of public policy.”

Archbishop Broglio also noted that the US Bishops will seek to uphold the rights of all people, including the unborn, as residents of 10 states voted on state constitutional amendments to restrict or expand access to abortion.

“In the United States, we are fortunate to live in a democracy, and yesterday, Americans went to the polls to choose who should lead our country as the next President of the United States,” he said.

“I congratulate President Trump as well as the national, state, and local officials who campaigned to represent the people. Now we move from campaigning to governing.

“We rejoice in our ability to transition peacefully from one government to the next. The Catholic Church is not aligned with any political party, and neither is the Bishops’ Conference. No matter who occupies the White House or holds the majority on Capitol Hill, the Church’s teachings remain unchanged.

“And we Bishops look forward to working with the people’s elected representatives to advance the common good of all.”

Meanwhile, CNA reports that the Catholic vote on Tuesday broke for Mr Trump by a large margin nationwide and within swing states, according to exit polls published by the Washington Post, the Associated Press, and NBC News.

According to the Washington Post’s exit poll, Mr Trump won the national Catholic vote by a 15-point margin: 56 per cent to 41 per cent. This shows a much larger victory for Mr Trump among Catholic voters than the Post’s 2020 exit polls, which showed Mr Trump with only a five-point lead over president Joe Biden, 52 per cent to 47 per cent.

The shift represents a 10-point swing in favour of Mr Trump from 2020 to 2024.

An exit poll from the Associated Press VoteCast showed Mr Trump leading among Catholic voters but by a smaller seven-point margin than the Post’s poll. According to the poll, Mr Trump won the Catholic vote with about 52 per cent compared with Harris’s 45 per cent.

Catholic voters in 10 key swing states polled by NBC voted for Mr Trump by a 15-point margin, with 56 per cent of the vote going to the former president and only 41 per cent going to Vice President Kamala Harris.
