As Australia prepares for the federal election on May 3, Catholic Social Services Australia urges all political parties to prioritise the common good over sectional interests in their policy platforms.
Jerry Nockles, executive director of CSSA, has emphasised the need for a respectful and honest discourse during the election campaign:
“As we enter this crucial period, we call on all political parties to elevate the standard of debate,” Dr Nockles said.
“Every policy discussion should recognise the inherent, inalienable, and inviolable dignity of every human person. We must firmly reject the dishonest scare campaigns that have unfortunately become commonplace in recent elections.”
CSSA advocates for policy platforms that reflect core Catholic Social Teaching principles, particularly the preferential option for the poor.
“In line with our Catholic values, we urge candidates to champion policies that uplift the most vulnerable in our society. The true measure of Australia’s progress lies in how we treat those on the margins,” Dr Nockles said.
The organisation says the election campaign presents an opportunity for Australia to reaffirm its commitment to the dignity and equality of all people.
“This election should be a time for unity, not division. We call on all Australians, including political candidates, commentators, and media, to engage in this democratic process with honesty, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the common good,” Dr Nockles said.
CSSA will closely monitor the campaign and policy announcements, advocating for initiatives that promote the well-being of all Australians, particularly the most disadvantaged.
