Dr Towns’ work with the archdiocese would “benefit us for decades to come”, Brisbane Archbishop Shane Mackinlay said.
“Sally is a much-loved and exceptional leader, and an inspiration to us all,” he said.
Dr Towns stewarded a system of 146 schools with a clear focus on faith-filled, inclusive and high-quality education for every student, he said.
Her commitment to Catholic mission guided her leadership, promoting educational excellence and technological innovation.
She also worked towards building strong partnerships with families and recognised parents as essential partners in their children’s learning journey.
“While being open about her health challenges in recent years, Sally has continued to work without complaint. Her courage has been an inspiration,” Archbishop Mackinlay said.
“We will continue to pray for Sally and give thanks for her contribution to Catholic education over more than 30 years.”
In the words of St Paul, Dr Towns had fought the good fight, he said.
Dr Towns is looking forward to spending time with family and focusing on her wellbeing.
Ross Tarlinton will assume the role of acting executive director from March 9 until a permanent appointment is made.
Mr Tarlinton has extensive experience in Catholic education across Australia, holding senior leadership and governance roles with Marist Schools Australia and the Lismore Diocese.
Archbishop Mackinlay said BCE was “fortunate” to have someone of Mr Tarlinton’s expertise during this time.
